Vegan & Vegetarian Cookbooks (and a giveaway!)

Thanks for all the comments on my veganniversary post! Several of you asked for cookbook recommendations and your wish is my command! Here are a few of the ones I use the most. This post is also the first ever giveaway I’ve done on this site. Leave a comment by Monday at noon Eastern time. Two winners* will each receive a copy of the Don’t Eat Off the Sidewalk zine, which is no longer for sale, but is totally fabulous! The tempeh wingz will knock you on your butt.

Most of the "order it here" links will go to Herbivore’s site because they are awesome and I think you should support them, but you can find most of them on Amazon as well.

vwav.jpg Vegan with a Vengeance. This was my first vegan cookbook. The pumpkin waffles are a favorite of Jimmy’s. Also contains great basics like tofu scramble as well as some more exotic stuff like Jerk Seitan (AMAZING). The coconut cupcakes are to die for (those were served at my bridal shower) and the chocolate raspberry blackout cake will totally knock you out. Here are some things I’ve made from the book. Order it here.
nomicon.jpg Veganomicon. Don’t let the size intimidate you. If I had to suggest only one cookbook to buy, this would be it. Besides hundreds of really really great and simple recipes, the book is worth it for the front section alone. It includes pantry stocking tips as well as sections on how to cook a bean, grain, vegetable. Invaluable information right there. Favorites: black bean burgers, spaghetti & beanballs, cornmeal masala-encrusted brussels sprouts, tempeh shepherdess pie. Here are some things I’ve made from the book. Order it here.
yellow.jpg Yellow Rose Recipes. My friend Joanna wrote this and it’s totally awesome. This book comes highly recommended for picky omnivores (especially dudes and kids) who like "American" cooking. Everything I’ve made from this book Jimmy has eaten second helpings of. Favorites are baked mac & cheeze, cajun spice tofu, butternut squash lasagna and the vegan parmesan substitute which I always have in my fridge now! Order it here. Read her blog here.
vive.jpg Vive le Vegan. Great book for lots of wheat-free recipes, also tons of kid-friendly stuff. I love her banana pancakes recipe. She also has a new book out that I wanna get called Eat, Drink & Be Vegan which I’ve gotten tons of great recommendations on. Order it here.
farm.jpg New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook. Fun fact: my mom as a teenager actually used to live on The Farm which is a big hippie commune in Tennessee. When she saw I had the cookbook she got a big kick out of that. Some great recipes for basics like salsa, vegan sour cream, how to make your own tofu, stuff like that. I really like the enchiladas too. Order it here.
cupcakes.jpg Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. All vegan cupcakes, all the time. Every single person who’s eaten a vegan cupcake from this book has said they’re better than "regular" cupcakes. The basic vanilla cupcakes with vegan buttercream icing will not let you down. Cupcake pictures! Order it here.
ivcooking.jpg Indian Vegetarian Cooking at Your House. I love this book, all the recipes are formatted like this. Dump this in a pot, stir, dump this in, stir, dump this in, stir, serve. Seriously they make it so easy. If you’re smart you’ll do all your prep ahead of time and separate them into little bowls so you can add in groups just like the book says. I’ve had great success with every recipe I’ve tried from this book. Favorites are bharta and chana masala. Pictures & more here. Order it here.
ptzine.jpg Papa Tofu. Awesome zine by Kittee. Contains delicious cake making recipes, Ethiopian food and southern cooking. The cheeze grits recipe omni tested and enthusiastically approved. Order it here.

I also recommend any of Madhur Jaffrey’s cookbooks. I personally own World Vegetarian and World of the East Vegetarian Cooking. Some of the recipes can be pretty complex but every single one I’ve tried has been successful.

Another great resource for vegan recipes is the Post Punk Kitchen (this site is also the genius of Isa, author of 3 of the above cookbooks). Also be sure to check out their forums. They have been of invaluable help to me over the past year and there are some pretty neato people on there too!

I hope this post is helpful! If you have other vegan/veg cookbooks that you love, please add them to the comments!

*I’ll use an online random number generator to pick the winners.

Yellow Rose Recipes, is on my 'to buy' list - for sure.

I also really like Vegan Vittles, Eat Drink and Be Vegan (great for wheat free stuffs), and The Vegan Lunch Box (awesome picnic ideas). How it all Vegan is pretty good too.

Amber, you are a constant source of information and inspiration. Reading about your lifestyle change and seeing it in action in you motivated me to to ditch the meat!

Smooches! You rock!

I have been a lurker for almost a year now....would love to win!

Have you ever seen the Rebar cookbook? It's my most-used veg*n cookbook ever, from one of my favourite restaurants in my hometown. I eat the Rustic Bread Salad probably once a week in the summer.

Posted by: Marianne on 14 May, 2008

I would like to learn how to cook vegetarian meals --- love Indian food =)

Posted by: lizp on 14 May, 2008

Thanks for listing those cookbooks. The hubby and I are on our third week of not eating chicken or beef. We are not vegans or even really vegetarians since we're still eating fish but it's handy to have all these suggestions so I can find new recipes to make. I loved finding the everydaydish.tv site off of yellowrecipes site. :)

If you like Jaffrey's books, take a look at Yamuna Devi's cookbooks (Lord Krishna's Cuisine and Yamuna's Table). Often need veganization (dairy plays a pretty central role), but good 'intermediate' guides to Indian and Indian-inspired cuisines.

Ah, I just discovered your site from Slashfood! Great stuff here for veg*ans. :)

As far as the cookbooks go, The Farm and Vegan with a Vengeance are SO helpful. Unfortunately, I don't own the other ones (yet) and am still on the library wait list for Veganomicon...But, I'll be sure to check them out!

Posted by: Lorena on 14 May, 2008

The Veganomicon is SO amazing. Such useful information on everything from cooking grains to what to keep on hand in the cupboard. Love it!

Happy Veganniversary!

I have some of these but thanks for the recommendations on others (I have Veganomicon from the library -- I might as well order it!)

And congrats!

i've heard great things about don't eat off the sidewalk - that's a quality giveaway.

one thing i like about your blog (among plenty of other reasons) is your predilection for isa moskowitz recipes. i love her cooking style.

Hooray for Veg cookbooks!

Posted by: Melisser on 14 May, 2008

I have made a couple things from The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen that have been tasty!

Posted by: Kim on 14 May, 2008

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is one of my favorites, hands down! Who doesn't love cupcakes? I'm an omnivore with vegetarian leanings, but one of my best friends is a vegan and I never go hungry at her house! Good on you for keeping up with your goal!

Posted by: Jen on 14 May, 2008

I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat a TON of vegetarian cuisine and I love it. I'd love a change to win! Thanks. Love your blog, congrats on the engagement/wedding!!

Newly converted vegan... would love a cookbook!

Posted by: Jeannette Montroy on 14 May, 2008

I recently picked up copies of Vegan Cupakes Take Over the World, Veganomicon and Vegan with a Vengeance. Wonderful books, all! Thanks for the recommendations on the others. I'll add them to my library queue!

Posted by: Andrea on 14 May, 2008

Hi, long time reader. First time poster. I'm not a vegan but I'm becoming more mindful of what I am eating and would love some new inspiration. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

Posted by: Michelle on 14 May, 2008

I am a vegetarian and my husband would rather eat anything that runs slower than him. He has expressed an interest in eating less meat if I could come up with some great vegetarian meals that would fill him up. Please help my husband get healthier and help me from having to prepare two dinners every night. Really, I need this cook book.

Posted by: DawnMarie on 14 May, 2008

I've been a vegetarian for most of my life, but don't have many cookbooks. so thanks for posting this. hopefully i win the giveaway :)

Posted by: Melissa on 14 May, 2008

Awesome! Thanks for all the hot tips! Have been a vego for a good 13 years now but am always teetering on the brink of veganism, andyou're certainly inspiring me to plunge over the edge!

Posted by: Sasha on 14 May, 2008

I've been reading your blog for quite some time and I really admire your dedication to eating quality, fresh foods. I've been a vegetarian for about 15 years, but certainly don't eat as healthy as you. Thank you so much for taking the time to list the sources for your great looking entrees!

Posted by: rayna on 14 May, 2008

Man, I've really got to get the Yellow Rose cookbook. I guess I'll add it to the wish list. I've got to second the Vegan Lunchbox and ED&BV. I also love the Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons: Bountiful Vegan Soups and Stews for Every Time of Year. It has an incredible sweet potato, kale, and yellow squash soup that is perfect with cheezy quackers. Mmmmmmmmm.

Posted by: Tasha on 14 May, 2008

I'll second "How It All Vegan." Just the chocolate pudding cake and the carrot cake recipes are worth the book.

The book also has recipes for non-food items, non-human food items (like dog biscuits), tips on vegan-izing the rest of your life and a handy glossary of common ingredients/processes that are non-vegan.

I've been a vegetarian for about a year and have slowly been thinking of taking the leap to full blown veganism. I'll be honest, I'm scared. I love seeing your photos and reviews though. I know one day I'll make the change.

Keep up the great work!

Great giveaway!

Posted by: Lesha on 14 May, 2008

I'm slowly trying to phase animal products out. Nava Altas's Vegetarian Family Cookbook has been my favorite resource so far.

Posted by: Sarah on 14 May, 2008

I picked up VCTOTW about a year ago and have yet to be disappointed. I eat mainly a vegetarian diet, but I will definitely be checking out your recommendations. Thanks!

Posted by: Megan on 14 May, 2008

I would be thrilled to win a copy of Don't Eat Off the Sidewalk. Please enter me, thanks for the contest & vegan cookbook recommendations. I'm definitely getting the Vegan Cupcake one!

Posted by: Amber G on 14 May, 2008

My family is vegan and we have Veganomicon and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World and I'm thing about getting Vegan with a Vengeance. I'm not a very good cook but I'm working on it. :)

Posted by: Laura on 14 May, 2008

Thanks for the reccomendations! I find it so funny that my kids resist veggies most of the time, but will ALWAYS eat any vegan dish I make! I REALLY need to get the vegan cupcake book, a must since I LOVE cake, and my poor little boy has a nasty egg allergy. So thanks!

Posted by: Rachel on 15 May, 2008

Please enter me...thank you!

Posted by: karin on 15 May, 2008

I love that vegicom cookbook, I am not a vegan but I enjoy vegan cupcakes and I was wondering how you made the transition. I buy zahiba meat and love mesome grilled lamb and goat. I just like the variety of vegan dishes that are out there it really increases the taste buds so to speak, Thanks for sharing your books :)

Posted by: Mona on 15 May, 2008

Indian Vegetarian Cooking at Your House, my daughter is 12 and a vegetarian so Im trying to find creative ways to get her to eat new and exciting dishes beyond the boca burgers and veggie chili she eats (which, nothing wrong with those but a little boring after awhile!)

Thank you!

Posted by: kari f on 15 May, 2008

I love that you have shared your cookbooks. I cook for some vegans and am always looking for new resources.

Posted by: Vickie on 15 May, 2008

Thank you for the recommendations!! I really would like to learn how to cook more vegetarian meals! Thank you for the giveaway!

Posted by: Kam A on 15 May, 2008

Ive just started switching over from a 5 yr vegetarian, to vegan. Great post. consider me entered. Its great to see new ideas on cooking esp when youre the only non-meat eater you know.

Posted by: Diane on 15 May, 2008

I'm not vegan, but I've also really loved Isa Chandra's recipes. Veganomicon is next on my list.

That's so cool that your mom lived on The Farm. I had a homebirth, so reading about Ina May Gaskin's _Spiritual Midwifery_, about natural birth on The Farm, was necessary.

Posted by: Leah on 15 May, 2008

veganomicon is a great cookbook..one of my faves! thanks for sharing your other choices!

My husband, daughter (10) and I are starting slow - making 1 vegan meal each week. Thanks for the cookbook suggestions - I'm going to check out my local library! Two books I recently purchased that you may be interested in are - Organic Body Care Recipes by Stephanie Tourles and Natural Beauty Recipe Book by Gill Farrer-Halls. My friends and I are going to each pick a recipe, get the ingredients, and get together for an evening of product assembly & beverages!

Posted by: Cassy on 15 May, 2008

I really want to see a book of ethiopian and east african vegan recipes. it's too expensive to buy injera every week. I'm going to look for papa tofu.

Posted by: Heather on 16 May, 2008

Hurrah! I want to win one of the cookbooks! Your food always looks SO delicious.

I'm commenting here too. I did over on the Live Journal side. But I didn't know if it would carry over.

Posted by: Kim Campbell on 19 May, 2008

just catching up on all i've missed on your blog the last month or so. sad i missed this giveaway...but thanks for the cookbook recommendations. i've been veg for about 10 years and i'm always looking for new inspiration.
i don't know if you know the sarah kramer series of cookbooks (how it all vegan, etc.). i have to say i use her "garden of vegan" and "la dolce vegan" books about 4 out of 7 meals/week. the recipes are really simple and yummy! can't recommend them highly enough (though i don't have "how it all vegan" i noticed other commenters mention it above).
