27 October, 2007The Lil’ Herb Garden
I got bit. By a new bug. A dirty one. I’m going to make a little garden! I have been wanting to compost for a while, and I want to start a Square Foot Garden in the spring and in the meantime I decided to adopt some little herbs!
I saw these on Craigslist and couldn’t resist. For $20 I got a huge bush-sized rosemary as well as sage, chives and elfin thyme. My car is going to smell like rosemary for a week. Which is okay by me!
Cute little teensy leaves and velvety sage.
Stinky chives and luscious rosemary.
Here’s my compost bin! Obviously a sophisticated design. Only expert gardeners should attempt construction. I have the hardware cloth wire-tied to the posts for quick release so when I want to turn the pile, I can just lift off the cage, move it, and shovel the pile back in. Now if the three straight days of rain will ever dry up, I’ve got a yard full of leaves to stick in there and get it cookin!

Lovely plants, I really want to get an herb garden started at my house. Great idea to look for them on craigslist!

you call that rosemary HUGE? wait 'til it takes over your 1 yard garden! Our rosemary is over 5 feet tall and is probably at least 5 feet in diameter. I do wack it back to its gnarly stump every year and it still grows back HUGE!
What I'm saying is: don't forget to prune!
I grew up composting... You may want to add the wet leaves to the mixture as you want your compost to be fairly wet to help aide in decomposition. Also, you may want to add an "air" source so that the only time you need to mix the compost is when you add more waste...
By this I think you could add a piece of PVC pipe to the middle that had holes drilled in (think-- 4" thick pipe, random 1" holes along it) and position in the center of the pile. The air flow helps mitigate too much oxygen while providing for even composition. Helps cut the smell too!
Anyways, I like the idea of composing because the amount of waste we have is almost gone when our plastics, metals, and papers are recycled and our "others" go into a future FERTILE use! Good luck

Vespabelle wants to fight, I think. Vote for my PT poster!
You are off to a great start, I never thought to look on craigslist for plants. It's not a bad idea.
