02 October, 2007Crafty Bastards! 2007
Finally, some pics from Crafty Bastards! Well the whole day was a blur. I started off with a bang, not even waking up til 5:52am, when I had to be in DC by 8 (a 3-ish hour drive)! I hurriedly tried to put on some semblance of an appearance and hopped in the car. The drive up was great until I got into the city (what is it about driving in DC proper that’s so nerve-wracking?), and the GPS system I was using (borrowed my mom’s car) kept sending me in circles. I finally got there and set up. Amanda already had all her cute stuff out. Check out these strawberry sachets. So adorable (and smell great too).
Her sister Kristina also had some awesome items like stationery and bike seat covers made from recycled sweaters!
Don’t you want a cute little birdie or mushroom for your hair? People were buying these up like mad!
Some of my dog collars. I have to find a better way to display these next time. The big collars were pretty popular. From what I hear there aren’t many stylish options for the full-figured doggies either. I feel your pain, sisters.
I also had some paw balm, stationery and leash bags (they hold the plastic poop pickup bags and attach to your leash - not ONE sold). There’s lots of these leftover so there will be an etsy shop update next week! You can see Amanda’s sweater creatures in the background, she sold almost all of them!
Our little booth. I’m so grateful Amanda’s mom provided us with the tent. It got HOT. Her whole family came along, it was fun hanging out with them!
Amanda’s gnomes and felted sweater tissue cozies. So cute. I’m so glad I own one now!
Her gorgeous hand dyed, screenprinted vintage slips. These were way popular.
Here’s my little dog friend Annabelle Blanche who stopped by to say hi and try on some collars. Yay for Bostons!!! Thanks to all my internet/blog friends who stopped by to say hi! Sorry I was so scatterbrained but it was awesome meeting all of you!
The crowds were insane. All day, the booth was packed. I was told that last year there were 15,000 people in attendance, and it wouldn’t surprise me to hear there was at least that many on Sunday. I’ve never, ever been to a show like this!
In addition to all the awesome crafty goodness, there were walking parades of people on stilts, a hip hop spoken word show, a fire breather, a snake lady, crafty workshops and demos all day, and a breakdancing competition which was so packed I couldn’t even see it.
So many cute, creative items!
Stuff from Woolarina and the Cupcake Girls - who were giving out free cupcakes, how cool is that?!
You know I made off with some of these awesome letterpress postcards. Love!
Saint Bob and an awesome monster.
Cards & things from a bardis and vinyl zippered pouches from Miss Alison (I got one of these, I love it).
We had a blast, thanks to everyone who came by and supported the Norfolk Craft Mafia! We would LOVE to do this show next year, and if you’ve never been I highly recommend checking it out!! The City Paper did a great job with it. I only hope Handmade Parade is half as awesome!

I got a few of those postcards, too. So funny. And so inexpensive!
Looks like soooo much fun! Maybe you could put the collars in a cute dog bowl? I'm thinking a white ceramic bone-shaped bowl or one with sedate black paws around the rim.
Hey! Sorry we didn't get to meet. I felt like crap on Sunday (yay bronchitis) so I didn't make it out. Looks fantastic, though!
Hopefully next time. :)
You need a stuffed dog you can put your collars on. Something like the one that Debbie cook uses to model her doggie underpants! I like how it's not patterned so it shows off the product really well.
Oh my god, the F That S postcard is amazing! I wish I could have gone to this; hopefully there will be something similar in Boston.
Man, now I'm really sorry I didn't get home to Virginia a week sooner, that stuff looks totes cute. I especially love the Sassy Dog collars, since my pooch is named Sassy (or Sasquatch, or Sassafrass, etc)...here's hoping they'll be up in your shop soon!
ooh! bird and mushroom things to keep your hair in check! how lovely!
If you don't mind me asking... Are those letterpress postcards for sale online anywhere? And what about those great woodgrain pillows & purse?
Wow, this looks like an AWESOME craft show!
I'm jealous! we generally don't have anything this cool in the St. Louis area, and when we do, it seems they always schedule it on a weekend when I'm not going to be in town.
My main question for you is...When do you sleep? I have been trying to get my etsy started for about 6 months now and just can't seem to find the time to get anything completed and posted.
I dig all your stuff and may have to pick up one of those collars for my mom's Boston, Harley.
Victoria - can't remember who makes the cards, the pillows are by My Imaginary Boyfriend.
Andrea - I'll sleep when I'm dead haha.
Thanks for snapping the pic of my bean dolls! It's great. Thanks for the mention. You guys had an amazing booth!
wow! looks like a great crowd! i love your collars & it's true that it is way too hard to find cute ones for larger dogs!
also: any idea where those letterpress postcards are from? i see one in there i want to track down!
Just to give you a few ideas for displays, you could go to gemsondisplay.com and buy some necklace/Chain display stands and attache them across the front you could get white which I think would really make the colors in your fabtic pop and they have an easel stand in back so that they can sit up nice. Also I was on ebay and I saw dog mannequins, I cant remember the cost but why not go to the thrift store and buy some stuffed animals and display your collars on them, for no color you could spray paint them white or if they are white with a few stains you colould paint them. Also maybe you could sew up a few stuffed animals and place your dog collars on them. I displayed some jewelry on some handmade dolls and people wanted to buy the dolls I had picked up from the thrift store. I painted the different dolls all white, all silver, all gold, all pink and all baby blue to highlight my jewelry and I sold the dolls too.
One other idea is just to cover a piece of wood or cardboard with fabric and attach your collars across that and make an easel stand on back.
Thanks for posting those picture it was great color inspiration. :)
Annabelle Blanche loves her new collar! Let me know if you ever make leashes to match your collars! It was great to meet you in person.
