Back to School!

I almost forgot to tell you guys, I’m going back to school! Time to start on ye olde Master’s degree. I’ll be heading back to ODU and getting it in English Literature. I think that’ll make a nice complement to my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (graphic design concentration, if you didn’t know), and I’ll get to hone my writing skills and delve even further into my love of books.

My classes start one week from today and I’m taking:

ENGL 600 Intro to Research & Crit
ENGL 565 African-American Literature

Since my background isn’t in English, I’m waiting to get some courses under my belt before I officially apply for the program. I’ll probably do that next fall. I spoke to the program director and he told me to not worry about anything but graduate level classes if I think I can handle them (duh) because I’ll save money not wasting time with undergrad courses (even though I don’t have very many undergrad English courses). These will transfer straight into my degree when I’m accepted to the program.

With my work schedule, I’m glad most of the grad courses are in the evening and only once a week. This semester I’ll be at school on Tuesdays from 4-10pm. I need to go this weekend and buy books! Who else is starting up school soon? What are you taking?

I was just telling my coworker that I wish I could start all over again and go back to college.

But, I'm going to take Spanish @ TCC if I can get my act together long enough to register.

I'm an English major, so yay for you. I've got a English Master's Best.Thing.Ever. It's totally useful, like when you go see Becoming Jane you know what a load of crap they're spreading about Austen's life.

I start monday to complete my BA-Applied Media Arts (concentration in graphic design) degree. I've taken all of the design courses offered, so I am taking mostly communication courses this last semester. I'll be glad when it's over.

SO! JEALOUS! I majored in English and American Lit at NYU. I would love to get my Masters in English, but I'm not sure how I could leverage it with my job ... I'm currently considering an MBA program -- but will definitely do a dual-degree in something liberal arts related ;o)

I'm not in school anymore, but I am co-teaching a course on diversity. I'm sooo nervous! I'll be applying for grad schools in the coming months.

Posted by: Val on 21 August, 2007

I bet your classes will be great - although I have been in school for almost seven years straight, I still get excited about buying school supplies and I still have butterflies in my stomach in each first class. It's really counter-intuitive, but I find something about school very freeing.

That being said, I majored in undergraduate in Psychology and Islamic Studies and I am currently going into my last year of law school. I am taking Employment Discrimination; Wills, Trusts and Estates; Family Law, and a clinical class in which I actually act as a representative for a client in and out of the court room. Should be fun :)

wow, good for you! i have to say that after my degree in psychology & my degree in education, i have NO desire to go back to school. i applaud you for having the energy & drive to work and take courses.
have fun and best of luck!

tomorrow i'm starting a german class at my local community college. i *really* should take spanish and brush up on those skillz instead, but german sounds so much more fun. and it's way easier to pronouce nicely.

i always get really excited when i think about grad school, but i still haven't decided on a program and then i get stressed out when i think about getting letters of rec and all that stuff. good luck with your classes though!

I'm back to school again too, but this is my BA in Math Education, and I have a long way to go. This fall it's Latin American History, Statistics, Teaching Diverse Populations, and an American Arts Humanities course. Oh well, at least I get to visit the museums.

I am still finishing my two year degree at a local community college (it is actually the biggest one in the country). I love community college, the classes are small (about 20 or less in each class), the parking is free, and the classes are close together (which is good since it is 110 degrees outside).

Next semester I will start at Arizona State University going towards a degree in Sustainability.

I am an Anthropology major at UofM. This semester I am taking:

Neighborhood Development & Social Entrepeneurship

African-American Literary Heritage.

I am very excited for you! I am really enjoy being in school, and I am sure you will do very well.

ughhhh i just started school this week. i'm taking 18 credits (3 of which are from a class in which we just travel to apparel marts and buy things). most people probably think fashion school is a breeze, but it's definitely time consuming and tough work. i can't wait to graduate so i can apply for internships in NYC and boston and start a career.

I have an undergrad in humanities with a minor in english. I'm beginning a master's in human resource management. Taking:

intro to human resources
21st century management
delivering superior customer value

Good luck this semester!

I'm a professor now, but I certainly went to grad school once-- my degree is in creative writing. Grad school is really a fun time--the work is tough, but I found the discussions and readings to be challenging and fascinating. It helps to be learning about something that actually interests you. Hope you have fun!

Congrats on going back to school!

I'm going back to UBC for my last semester of a BA in Sociology, with a minor in Psychology. I'll be taking Political Sociology, Social Movements, and a probably-boring-ass theory course.

As much as I've enjoyed the last four years, I feel like I should graduate and then do a second degree in something else. I just don't know what or with what money! ;)

Posted by: Marianne on 22 August, 2007

I started back to college this week. I have a Music class, Sociology, and and two World Civ classes. I hope the semester surprises me with some excitement, but I'm not anticipating it.

I'll say this, prepare to be exhausted...working full-time and being a full-time student is major overload.

You never cease to amaze me, Amber.

Go find out what books you need and then order them used online, it is way cheaper than ordering them at a college book store.

i'm going back for 6th grade english and 6th grade honors english. you know, as the teacher.

Posted by: beth on 22 August, 2007

Yay! Back to school! I start back 2 weeks from today.

I'm starting my second year undergrad (BA) at SMU and this semester I am taking two sociology courses (soc will probably be my major), two Anthropology (one on language, the other on gender) and a Women's Studies class. I'm really excited about all of them.

Good luck with the new school year! :-)

Wow - congratulations!

I stumbled up on your blog a few months ago and I must say it's quite awesome.

I'm an Interior Design major at the Int'l Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa. I graduate after my next round of classes and I think I'm also moving onto grad school. But, I'm currently taking the following:

Senior Individual Design
Advanced 3d CAD
Great Movies Great Books

Congrats on going back for seconds! :)

In '05 I took the plunge into Financial Aid because I wanted so badly to finish and get my Bachelors. I regret not taking on the debt at 18. Being 30 and trying to work full time, handle my marriage and house + 2 cats, take care of family, and try to have a social life and go to school half time is daunting. However, it has to be done if I am going to earn more money. The paper is going to shoot me up the ladder higher.

I am back to school again after a summer break. I am working on my Bachelors in Liberal Arts with a focus in Psychology at the University of Richmond.

I am taking 2 required courses (1) Professional Communication (English) (2) Informations System Technology (IT) and as my third free choice I am taking (3) Science of Natural Disasters (Geology).

I have been at UR for 2 semesters, this is the third. I am over halfway to my degree. Looking forward to graduation and being the first in my family to graduate college.

Media Criticism

20th Century American Drama
World Lit Since 1900

I went back to school full-time for grad school...I was going to say a few years ago, but seeing as I've been out for 4 years, it's been about 6 now! I second Rae on not buying the books. In fact, I'd go a step further--before buying everything, make sure you'll need it, and if you're only going to use it for some stupid reason, just go to the library. I actually checked books out of a nearby university library for several courses. I also sold books to the people a class behind me and online--in some cases making money in the deal!

Anyway, best of luck and enjoy! I loved being in school the second time around because I had better perspective and appreciation. I do envy you getting a masters in English...that was my undergrad major and I love it. Hmmm, maybe I should consider just taking a course...now you've got me thinking!

I'll be going back to community college this fall for the Library Technician program--my goal is the coveted MLIS! (Just read someone else here is going next spring)

Hooray for going back to school!
