Morrissey at the Norva

Completely amazing show last night at the Norva. Morrissey, Morrissey, Morrissey!

I was worried about being late but I got there about 8:30, there was no line for will call, and Jimmy and I zipped straight up to the front at the right side of the stage near Matt, Megan, Andrea, Malorie, Sal and Davood. Billy was nearby too and I kept seeing faces I recognized across the crowd. I’m so glad I got up close, I hate being short.

The kick drum said “Art Suffer England Hatred”. He had five or so guys in the band, all wearing black. They looked like his little cabana boy mariachi band. The highlight of the show definitely had to be during How Soon Is Now when Timmy ran onto stage, kissed Morrissey and jumped into the crowd right in front of us. I swear Timmy is the only person on earth who could get away with this, Timmy, you should be an assassin or something. Look into it. Here’s the video of the whole song:

I hope someone posts a setlist. He didn’t play either of my favorite Smiths songs or Come Back to Camden, which I LOVE, but I was definitely not disappointed at all in the songs he did play.

He sang The Boy with the Thorn in His Side and I was so stoked for Matt cause I know that is his jam, but some annoying girl who tried to play crowd monitor the whole time (DON’T LET ANYMORE PEOPLE OVER HERE OKAYYYY) kept passing him her camera asking him to take pictures and video. Hello, I am shorter than you and further back and I did fine, deal with it lady.

Another video for your enjoyment: Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

During Let Me Kiss You, right at the point where he sang “think of someone you physically despise” he took off his shirt and threw it into the crowd. You so crazy, Morrissey.

I think he actually threw about three shirts into the crowd during the show, that’s gotta get expensive after a few nights haha. I heard there was some scuffle over one of the shirts, some lady put it on and someone ripped it off her. Sucks to be standing there in your bra, but you should have stuffed that shirt down your pants and hid it, that’s all I’m saying.

Other highlights of the show: the humongous gong, bass drum? and huge cymbals that were used with tremendous effect, especially during Life Is A Pigsty. Very dramatic.

Oh, what was with the Norva playing those extremely annoying vintage music videos and commercials and movie clips during the intermission? It was so distracting and I wasn’t digging it.

The band was awesome, everything sounded on point. Anyone who thought Morrissey might be losing his voice as he gets older is way sadly mistaken. He sounded glorious and all the little inflections and expressions and gestures of the live show just brought out his gorgeous voice that much more.

They went out with The Last of the Famous International Playboys. We were all hoping for a second encore, I had heard he’d played There Is a Light That Never Goes Out on the second encore at a couple shows, but no such luck. I left in a daze, covered in sweat and grinning ear to ear.

The opener was Kristeen Young (thanks to Justin for the link & spelling correction!), and I dug her a lot. She had a very Bjork vibe, sort of Bjork mixed with opera. It was just her on the keyboards with a drummer in front of a white sheet. Great colors and strange music.

Amazing show, definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

Edited to add the setlist:
The Queen Is Dead
First Of The Gang To Die
In The Future When All’s Well
Everyday Is Like Sunday
Irish Blood, English Heart
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
Let Me Kiss You
You Have Killed Me
All You Need Is Me
Girlfriend In A Coma
Disappointed
I Just Want To See The Boy Happy
That’s How People Grow Up
The National Front Disco
At Last I Am Born
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want
Life Is A Pigsty

haha, i'm glad you got timmy on film. that was amazing.

the videos were morrissey's, i've heard he plays them at all the shows.

omg. most amazing show ever.

He's looking pretty good for an old guy. Glad you had fun.

Posted by: phoenix on 10 July, 2007

hahaha seriously, only timmy

Posted by: shaka on 10 July, 2007

you also forgot to mention my favorite morrissey quote ever:

"she would probably take that little boy and make him into a coat if she could."

aw, he hates madonna. cute.

That show was great.

Did not expect to hear "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want." I snickered at how he changed the lyrics to "have what I want" because after 20 some years he's probably realized it's more proper.

*so jealous*
thanks for sharing your amzing pics & video!
that man is beautiful...

Posted by: michelle on 10 July, 2007

So jealous! Great photos.

morrisssssayyyy! your friend is awesome. the video for 'will never marry' is a bunch of footage like that, of people ambushing him onstage, its awesome.

& the shirts he throws out into the crowd are either gucci or yves saint laurent (a friend caught one once at a show a few yrs ago, it was a YSL). now THAT's pimp.

Posted by: sarah on 10 July, 2007

Your photos are amazing, they would make great prints.

Posted by: Erin on 10 July, 2007

Thank you for sharing you pictures Amber. I was standing by the wall not that far from you and I was saying to myself, I wish I could see that girls pictures. They came out pretty nice. Thanks again.

Awesome videos...kudos. Saw Moz in Boston 2 nights before this show and he is truly spectacular. Cant get "Let Me Kiss You" outta my head after 2 nights!!
PS I think his comments were: "Let ME Get WHO I want" lol...wassup with that Mozzer. You Rock!!

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is Moz saying before "Please, Please...". How did he react after Timmy dove back into the crowd--or did he react at all?

Posted by: Veronica on 10 July, 2007

Veronica, I don't think he reacted much at all, I was watching Timmy though, that's why the camera is not so steady... haha!

Posted by: Amber on 10 July, 2007

I recall in the last tour someone pleading for "Come Back to Camden," to which he replied he hadn't found a way to do that one live. I imagine the more intimate songs are harder for a performer to feel completely satisfied with. He also hits some pretty high notes in that one, as I recall. . . . not that he never does so live, but sadly the chances you'll ever hear that one live are slim. A fave of mine as well.

I'm linking this in my blog to share all of the amazingness... what awesome pictures! you are the best!

Posted by: beth on 10 July, 2007

Awesome pictures. Even the videos were great.

Posted by: Suicidalphil on 10 July, 2007

Wow! Your pics are amazing. Gotta get one of those cameras for myself.

I heard the show sold out in three minutes. That true? Poor Bobby wanted to go.

Posted by: Cassie on 10 July, 2007

Cassie, the presale sold out in three minutes. When I got tickets on the first day of the sale, Ticketmaster was saying it sold out like RIGHT after I got tickets, but I know lots of people got them weeks later, so I don't think it sold out THAT quick.

Awesome show though.

THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THESE UP!
Thank you.

Posted by: julielion on 10 July, 2007

Thankyou so much for these photos and video, they are wonderful. Also congratulations to your friend Timmy, he's very stealth like the lucky devil :)

Posted by: Emma on 10 July, 2007

We saw him here in AZ last month and it was an incredible show! You have amazing pictures!
I can't say I enjoyed Kristeen Young, though.
And alas, I'd love to kiss Morrissey!

Posted by: Kathy on 10 July, 2007

MORRISSEY!!!! Sigh. So brilliant.

Mary Jessica (from the blog Home Ec) actually caught a tossed-off Morrissey shirt at a concert once - she said it smelled very nice.

Posted by: Mary-Heather on 10 July, 2007

Thank you for the beautiful photographs. And the How Soon Is Now video is hysterical.

What a great show.

Posted by: kyle on 10 July, 2007

AMBER:

True story....

I smelled the shirt at IHOP. It smelled like Lavender, and it was Dolce and Gabbana.

Should we expect anything less? Ha!

(also, thank you for posting all of this!)

OMG! Girl you are so lucky! I wanted so badly to go to that! I love Morrissey! Thank you thank you for sharing the photos and video! Way awesome! :D

Posted by: Lynn on 10 July, 2007

I am saving up to go to some concerts. Me and the Hubby plan on going to see George Clinton at Toad's Place.

I watched that video of him singing Please Please... omg! Totally adoration!!!

I feel old now. lol! But I was a mere wee one when he was singing anyhoosie so isn't so bad.

My favorite Smith song is Girlfriend in A Coma!

:D

Thanks for the set list. It was one of the best shows I've seen. Didn't he also play "I will see you in far off places"?

Posted by: Maureen on 10 July, 2007

Thank you for the photos they came out quite nicely. I've learned now that when a venue says "No cameras" I'll be able to have one in. Did they even check? I never bring mine but it seems like I could get away with it.
Oh, I was thrilled when your friend got on stage to kiss Morrissey! I cheered for him from the left side!

The vintage videos you talked about during intermission are played at the other Morrissey shows, too, at least in the U.S. I don't know if he chose to play them himself, but they highlighted things he fancies- those obscure French artists, James Dean, The New York Dolls, etc.. However, they got pretty annoying (that stand up comic singing partridge in a pear tree..)

Posted by: anonymous on 11 July, 2007

those pictures are beautiful. what camera do you have? I need an upgrade.
i do not dig kristeen young (Ps, her real spelling on her birth cert is kristine so you probably weren't that off w/ your spelling) at all. I respect her crazy amazing voice. i just dont want to hear it in the way she's presenting it!

Posted by: bogdana on 11 July, 2007

Thanks to everyone, you guys are awesome.

The camera I use is a FujiFilm Finepix F30. It's a little point and shoot camera but it's wonderful.

Posted by: Amber on 11 July, 2007

wonderful photos of the show! We were sitting/standing in that little raised area with the barstools on the main floor. I haven't seen Morrissey since the Smiths (yes I am old ;-)) so I was thrilled at how great his voice sounded and how adorable he still is. It was really a fabulous show, and your photos are fantastic!

Posted by: pinky on 11 July, 2007

east of eden (starring james dean) is one of the videos he plays.

Posted by: christopher bird on 11 July, 2007

i am getting different stories about the girl whos shirt got torn off her body.

Posted by: chris on 11 July, 2007

Excellent pics and videos. What a legend, what a night! Thanks for sharing.

Posted by: Michelle on 11 July, 2007

I was just to the left of the center. One of the reasons I love Mozz live is the way that he makes you feel like he's looking you in the eyes while he sings. Of course, the two shirts that found their way to the crowd.. I don't think I've ever seen a bunch of girls fight like that before. I actually had to cling to the arm of the friend I was with because she had a hold of the purple shirt that came down beside us and just wouldn't let go. *always bring keys to a Morrissey show to cut off a piece of the shirt to escape the fight*

Amazing shots and video. I can relive Monday over and over now. ^_^

Posted by: Rob on 11 July, 2007

The movies during intermission were Morrissey's doing.

Posted by: Boz on 11 July, 2007

I think you were standing in front of us (and maybe talking to some of my friends after the show?). I remember seeing a camera and being even more pissed that I hadn't brought mine. My treo took SHITTY pictures. Such a bum out. The video of Timmy is amazing. The weird thing is, I got a link to your site from a guy I know in CA. Small world. It was a good show. I'm glad I was there. Thanks for the great photos.

Posted by: sarah beth on 12 July, 2007

i thought Timmy WAS an assassin when he was younger? Scissors + Mother = ??? No?

Posted by: TheeBlizzard on 12 July, 2007

I posted one of your AWESOME photos ASAP....did you know the bare naked Moz shot got posted on brooklynvegan too!

BTW...my friend is selling a single floor seat for the NJ show on the 24th! No refunds they say. Despite the fact that she can't rearrange her work/flight/vacation ect, they say the ticket is good....use it!

Anyway, if anyone wants to buy her floor GA seat, let me know.
