Little things

Picked up four of the magnetic knife racks from Ikea last weekend, and moved my little spice rack over to the wall. Now the many, many, many, many concerned souls who very enthusiastically told me I was destroying the flavor of the spices by exposing them to scalding stove heat and searing bright kitchen light can calm down a bit. Now they only have the unsatisfactorily dim kitchen bulb to contend with. Somehow, I think they will survive.

Also many, many moons after I featured it on my Daily Click, I broke down and bought the large bird branch from PB Teen since it was on sale. Looks like I got it just in time too, cause they are all sold out now! I like the little birdies watching over my bracelets and necklaces. In other news, putting together flatpacked Ikea items is exhausting.

Oh, and tonight is the premiere of Top Design! I told a few people that I wanted to do recaps of the show, much like my beloved Project Runway, but seeing as starting next week it will be conflicting with LOST, that may not happen. Sawyer is way cuter than Todd Oldham, and a girl has to have priorities, for real.

Love the magnetic strips! What size containers did you buy at Lee Valley?

Posted by: Charmaine on 31 January, 2007

omg! your knives are going to stab the spices and ruin their flavour!

Posted by: christopher bird on 31 January, 2007

also, i love the branches. i've got a similar steel tree type thing, but i'd much rather have the cast. it's prettier.

Posted by: christopher bird on 31 January, 2007

I LOL'd on Christopher's comment about the knives.

I am IN LOVE with that bird branch. If you ever get tired of it, let me know.

Posted by: Mia on 31 January, 2007

Those knives, just hanging there, kinda scare me!

I love the bird branch. And your white glassware. (Is there a name for that? I have some pieces that I love.)

Posted by: shannon on 31 January, 2007

i think the spices look even BETTER on the magnetic strips than on the stove. and the bird hangy thing looks amazing.

Posted by: sarah on 31 January, 2007

Charmaine - I think they're around 2".
Shannon - It's called milk glass.

Posted by: Amber on 31 January, 2007

Thank GOD you finally took care of those spices.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHA - that whole thing cracked me up. Love the new set up and the bird branch, too. Guess I should pay attention to your clicks - I would have loved that. :)

Oh thank heaven the spices are safe now. ;-) You know ... Bravo will run TD in about 30 other time slots so it doesn't have to necessarily conflict with Lost. Just sayin ...

Posted by: Debbie Cook on 31 January, 2007

Milk glass! Yes! I surely knew that. ;)

Posted by: shannon on 31 January, 2007

God I love those branches!

Posted by: Cara on 31 January, 2007

I love the spice strips. What a clever and colorful way of displaying your jewelry. Mine is sitting listless in a jewelry box... hmm... I should put it to work!

Posted by: Sarah on 31 January, 2007

It's all phenomenal!
I love your style.

Posted by: Amy on 31 January, 2007

Tyler Florence and Dave Libermann (both my TV boyfriends) have that magnetic knife strip. You're like some kind of professional now!

Posted by: tiff on 31 January, 2007

also - i was just reading the comments posted to you on Digg... and i laughed at whoever went completely OT and said you "should use fresh spices!" .......... oy! everyone needs to put their 2 cents in i guess. i recently posted my new desk on an lj-comm and someone told me to learn woodworking to make a better one. sheesh!

Posted by: sarah on 31 January, 2007

Hahah people have too much time on their hands.

Posted by: Amber on 31 January, 2007

Three things:

1. I had a couple of those magnetic strips from Ikea that I was using for a magnet art project and I always wondered what the heck Ikea thought people were using them for -- I had NO IDEA that they were actually for knives!

2. I might need to buy spices now so I can copy you.

3. YOU ARE SO HANDY! I'm so glad we friended! (Awwwwwwwwwwllllllllllllllll nuf lurve)

Posted by: ardaliz on 31 January, 2007

The knives scare me - is that safe? I would be afraid of brushing past one and getting stabbed in the foot. Or a crazy person having easier access (I watch too many horror movies). I hope those are strong magnets! That wall looks great though.

I love the branches, that's so cool!

Don't worry about Top Design - Bravo will rerun it a million times. If nothing else, for sure they'll play it before next week's show. I'm going to a movie tonight and I bet when I get home I'll be able to watch Top Chef and Top Design, normally Wednesday night it's repetition all night long.

Posted by: Susan on 31 January, 2007

Yeah the knives are safe, and the magnets are super strong. Lots of people do this in their kitchen.

Posted by: Amber on 31 January, 2007

Personally I like the racks a lot better for the spices. Very artsy. Umm Yes, your style is adorable.

Posted by: Brandy on 31 January, 2007

I love the jewelry tree!!! Do they have the milk glass in other colors?

Posted by: wildflower38 on 31 January, 2007

Well, now I can sleep at night. Your spices are safe.

Love the milk glass.

Posted by: Laurah on 01 February, 2007

I love how people are now obsessing over the knives.
GUYS AMBER KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING....CALM DOWN.

Posted by: Gen on 01 February, 2007

She does? You speak lies! ;)

Remember look BOTH ways before crossing the street!

Posted by: Brandy on 01 February, 2007

Ok- as Amber's Mom I can assure you I taught her not to run with scissors and how to hold and use a knife. Also, she doesn't have kids or a manic roommate so no danger there.

However, I worry about the magnetic field she is creating with using so many magnetic strips and the danger imposed on innocent bracelet wearing visitors. Will they get stuck to her wall and possibly impaled?

Posted by: Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach on 02 February, 2007

Hahaha - I'm just concerned about Amber's safety, Mom! You taught her well, I'm sure. :-)

I'm also concerned that if I ever entered her kitchen or magnetic wall room, the steel rod in my leg would make me stick to the wall. X-D

Posted by: Susan on 02 February, 2007

I adore that branch thingie, and I'm so sad I only found out about it after it sold out. My bracelets and headbands are all in a big red bowl on the bathroom counter.

Posted by: Kristin on 05 February, 2007

I love the spices even more now. Looks really good.

Posted by: true on 07 February, 2007

so, with the magnetic strips, do you no longer need magnets on the backs of the tins?

those tins... the lids don't seem very secure. i wish they twisted on and off. :\ ever had any rogue spices jump out at you?

Posted by: makakona on 09 February, 2007

You still need the magnets. The tins themselves aren't magnetic. You have to hold the lid on when you place it onto the strip or yeah, it will come apart. We had a little coriander casualty when my dad was using them the other day haha.

Posted by: Amber on 09 February, 2007

I am delurking to tell you I love the spice wall/magnetic strip idea!
I actually have the Lee Valley tins and have been just making storage or arty magnets out of them. I just need to hit Ikea now.
I really enjoy your site! : )
