02 January, 2007Kyla rings in the new year
We’re very lazy about ringing in the new year around chez moi. I guess I don’t really celebrate it like other people do. I slept through it last year, and this year I had gorgeous yellow rubber gloves on, cleaning the half-bathroom in Jimmy’s apartment. One of his roommates moved out and now he has the bigger, better room. I got a nice big smoocharoo at midnight, but other than that new year’s went by unnoticed.
On January 1st, The Queen tried to nap while I annoyingly took pictures of her. I woke early, but made a luxurious breakfast, drank tea, read my book and dozed until around noon when I finally got in gear and headed to my mom’s. I had the best intentions of painting two bookshelves as well as my desk which I finally assembled. I sanded and put a first coat on one bookshelf before deciding that my time spent painting two cheapo MDF bookshelves is worth more money than it would cost to just buy two cheapo MDF bookshelves in the colors I wanted. The desk project has been postponed until next weekend when dad brings the power sander thingy back. I’m so lazy.
Since I’m pretty much all knitted and crafted out for a while, my current new obsession is Japanese cooking, and specifically bento box lunches. I visited the Asian market on Great Neck Road for the first time, and let me just say that I’ll be doing a good bulk of my shopping there from now on. Their produce selection is amazing and cheap, and they have really fresh seafood as well (live crabs, fish swimming in tanks, as well as a huge range of fresh whole fish and shellfish). I got a pound of shrimp with the heads still attached, and tried my hand at making a Japanese curry. Granted, I used a Japanese curry mix for the spice portion, but it came out delicious. I’m excited about trying new recipes with some of the ingredients I picked up at the market.

It’s unseasonably warm here, (70 degrees yesterday) so despite the overcast sky, we took Kyla down to the beach so she could pull my arm off, sniff every grain of sand and pee about a thousand times.

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing new year. Here’s to 2007, I have a feeling it’s going to be great.

I loved that shot of the beach. It looks very peaceful. Oh by the way will you be recaping the interior design show on Bravo?
I haven't decided yet! I'll be pretty stoked to see Jonathan Adler every week though haha. I have it loaded into my DVR. If I like it, I'll probably recap, but if I don't, the guys who did Project Rungay have a recap blog here:
Bento boxes... seriously... we might ACTUALLY BE twins (but you have better hair, and I'm ok with that)
I still want this box for lunch...

I'm also absolutely obsessed with Japanese food. I'm lucky enough that, living in Southern California, I have two Japanese groceries within a half hour drive. Sadly, I'm already at work, so I don't have the book in front of me, but I have an awesome Japanese cookbook. I picked it up at the bookstore in one of the groceries. It has both the Japanese and the English translations. I'll look into it tonight and post the name if you're interested. jbox.com has a lot of similar books. Search for "cookbook" there and you'll find a few. I prefer these books over others because the food's more authentic and not just miso soup, sukiyaki and sushi rice.
I also am obsessed with Bento boxes! You need to get yourself some of those egg molds for some hard boiled hello kitty heads and stuff --many a day I have trolled flickr marvelling at the work a lot of people have put into their bentos...it is so impressive. check out this one:

too cute!
Amber, I hope you don't mind, I've linked you on my blog. (we were already lj/flickr friends, but I'm attempting to make a move away from livejournal, and start using my stalled out blogger one a little more regularly!)
hope that's ok :) cara
I like the way you celebrated New Years. Except for all that sand, the trip to the beach looks like fun.
I love bento boxes. I hope you post pictures of your endeavours with it!
Thanks for the link, Cara!
Absolutely gorgeous picture of the beach! It's going to be pouring and about 38F here in Portland. I'd better go stare at your photo a bit more...
I'm so jealous of your weather, and the beast looks too cute! I hope you have a wonderful New Year.
I just love kyla. I wish that she and chubby could meet. They would make an adorable couple.
hi there! just stumbled upon your site as i was looking for other boston terrier folk out there. i just adopted my adorable boston (with a little pug thrown in) jobi three days ago (my first dog!) and he is sleeping on his blankie at the moment. kyla is gorgeous! what a beautiful, healthy coat she has! what in the world do you feed her? best of luck with the doggie training; i've got to learn to make my little jobi pay some sort of attention to me when he's on a leash. i'm glad i found your site; the quality of your pictures is really wonderful.
