The Infinity Dress

This dress doesn’t have a pattern, and has gone by many names, “Infinity Dress,” “convertible dress,” etc. I learned about it via Dress A Day, and followed through to the tutorial on Rostitchery.

This dress is made up of four pieces — a full circle skirt that you step into, a waistband, and two very long straps. You just put them together at the waistband and voila! A one hour dress project. One seam. That’s it.

It really is THAT easy. I made some modifications from the original one-seam design because I wanted a wider waistband that covered the straps in the front, but in hindsight the first method probably would have been easier. I originally intended this dress for myself, but once I was done sewing it, the thread had taken all the stretch out of the waist area (which stayed up on its own due to the stretch) and it was no longer comfortable. I could get it on, but cotton jersey should be ultimate comfort and this wasn’t.

I was ready to rip it and start over when my sister Heidi came over. She’s a couple sizes smaller than me so I decided to try it on her and it fit her like a glove. So now she has a new dress. Isn’t she cute?

There are a million different ways to wrap this dress, we only took one picture because it was very late and she had to get home. Go visit the 48-page long thread at Craftster for many, many iterations of this great dress. I didn’t hem it or finish any edges, but I really don’t think it needs it, although it certainly wouldn’t be difficult to do this.

This was a really fun and easy project that took me literally an hour and about $15 worth of fabric. Comparable dresses are selling online from $100-400. Gotta love that.

What a wonderful dress. I wish I had time to go and get some cloth before I go away on holiday on Saturday - this dress would be perfect for an evening out on hols!

Amber, you are really talented. I am impressed with this dress, and I hope you continue to develop. Now if you made menswear...*grin*.

When I was in a new high school, they put me in this home-making class where in one project we had to sew shorts. I was like, WTF? To my surprise, I was the first one who finished, and I honestly enjoyed putting it together. I never wore 'em though. But I was damn proud. So I know how you feel when you created something like that dress.

Cheers!

the dress is incredible! I can't wait to make one for myself, I also love the color of the fabric. A++++

WOW. That dress is slinky perfection, and it looks easy enough for even my borderline incompetence at the Singer.

You're In. Good work.

Amber, I've become addicted to your blog from PT. It's lovely, you're lovely and I like that your addiction to craftiness rivals mine.

So this dress, (i've been reading the huge thread) I'm considering trying it. Even though I'm by no means a sewer. Buttons, Hems and whipstitch are about my knowledge.

So be honest with me.. Am I going for broke or is it really as simple as it seems? :)

No, it is THAT easy. Check out that thread on Craftster if you have questions. It resolved most of mine.

You don't even have to sew it if you don't want. Some girl on that board put it together with fusing tape or something!

I'm interested in this dress but it seems like such a bad idea for someone with big boobs like me!

Becky, for the record my sister and I both have big huge gazongas (hers are bigger) and this dress is fine. No bra is even needed because of the stretch. Seriously! And if you wanted, you could always put cups in the dress or even wear a bra if you wrap it one of the more demure ways (like this pic).

Lovelovelove it! I've been wanting to try one of those, but was a little worried about the actual wearability, also how it would look on someone who wasn't "model sized." (As in, would it show my cellulite?) You have inspired me! I shall try! Yay for you!

Amber, I can't sew, please make me one of these! PLEASEEEEEE!!

I will pay you in copious amounts of money, mac and lush!

I'm serious!

Thank you!

awesome! I totally have to try this...what kind of fabric did you use?

Posted by: Cara on 11 August, 2006

I found only 2 pictures at the site you sent me to. But I wonder, how would this dress would look with tights? Pants? Boots? I guess the girl would have to be tall to carry such a look.

Posted by: Pony on 11 August, 2006

You should totally sell these. I'd buy one, for real.

What? You MADE that??? What skillz!!!!

My friend wanted me to check out your website, but specifically the Infinity Dress. She said I'd love it and that it would totally look great on me. It really is an awesome dress, and I could definately see myself wearing it. I think you're very talented. Wish I could say the same about myself.
