Time for a reading update

I went to the library today looking for a book on drafting your own patterns (for clothing) and was highly annoyed to find out they classify it as a reference book, which means I can’t check it out. This book is like $90 at the bookstore. Ugh.

So I walked out in protest (no one noticed) and headed over to my favorite lunchtime haunt, you guessed it — Prince Books. I ordered a salad from the cafe, and grabbed the first book that caught my eye, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I’m through the first chapter and I’m already captivated. I feel a little guilty because I still haven’t finished The Time Traveler’s Wife but this book is really short, so I’ll probably be done in a few days. I think this book is going to be pretty sad. Lots about footbinding and how Chinese culture was fully crappy toward womens’ existence. But it’s beautifully written so far.

Anyone read this one? Time for another update: what are you reading?

Oh, that book sounds like it is something I'd like. I was just making a list of books I want to read, when you post came up.

But right ow I am reading The Tipping Point- Malcolm Gladwell. Very interesting.

ok. i have made several items, and im considering going back into the make my own clothes situation.

i have made aline skirts, tank tops, tshirt surgeries, legwarmers, shawls, my own wedding dress, 50's party style dresses.

i wanna learn how to make capris, tshirts, and hippy style tank tops. i really have never used any patterns. i just cut out the way i think it should look..a smaller version. then i take my measurements basd on the cut and the sides of the thing i cut out. i add mine. i make a bigger version and use that one.
i hope that made sense.
but it gives it a cute diy unique look. i dont really care for adding zippers or hooks and stuff. i use mostly elastic, buttons, and drawstrings, and velcro.

you should try ebay/half.com and used book stores and thrift stores for pattern drafting books. I've purchased several at our library's used book store.

I'm currently reading "Misquoting Jesus" and a bunch of old Threads magazines I bought at an estate sale.
